The Plastic Attraction
The Plastic Attraction aremade up of Liam Nicholls (vocals), Matt Nunes (guitar/vocals), Peter Hornsby (bass/vocals) and Chris Ricci (drums/vocals). They've all being playing music for a while, and the Perth band are releasing our debut single at the end of the month!
Can you tell us about yourself? Where you're from and what you've been up to over the past few years?
We're from Perth, Western Australia. The last couple of years it's been a bit like - write, record, discard, repeat. But now we've gotten to a point where we're actually releasing a song, so we couldn't be happier!
How would you describe your music?
I think most people would put us under the indie/pop rock genre. I suppose you'd say we're channelling some of the guitar-centric 1990s, but with a bit of a modern twist.
Can you tell us a little bit about your influences?
I think you can hear the 1990s influence in our sound mixed with dashes of the big British indie bands (The Wombats, Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks) – as well as hints of some of the more recent Australian bands such as DMA's and The Preatures.
What are you currently promoting?
Our debut single "Holding You" is due for release on 26 August 2016. We're playing a local launch to promote the song and we would one day love to visit you and play it live!
Have you got a particular song you've done that you're particularly proud of, one that might define you?
I think with our first release on its way – we might have to pick that as our defining song! But we'll be releasing further singles in the months to come and an EP early next year, so we might be in a better position to pick a defining song then.
What are you currently listening to?
All sorts of things – funk rock, indie, electropop, neo-soul – heck, even had some barbershop on Spotify the other day. We love listening to everything and will often go out as a band to see random shows.
And your favourite album of all time, the one you couldn't do without?
Rather than one favourite album from the band we thought we'd give one per band member
Liam – Red Hot Chili Peppers – Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Matt – Winery Dogs – Self Titled
Pete – Millencolin – Pennybridge Pioneers
Chris – Sevendust - Animosity
What are your hopes for your future career?
Keep on improving our songwriting, and hopefully play some gigs in the process!
If money were no object what would be your dream project?
I think it would have to be to build a live music venue where bands who are just starting out can come and play shows. Rob (from Gyroscope fame) recently did something similar in our hometown (see http://thehenhouse.com.au/live). In a city which is lacking in small live music venues, it is an amazing initiative.
What's the best thing about being a musician?
Probably the moment when everything comes together at a gig. Where everything just flows, the sound is good, and nothing is exploding.
And the worst?
Probably the packing up after the gig. Followed closely by having to go to work the next day.
Finally, have you anything you'd like to say to the readers of Americana UK?
We have all travelled to the UK in the past and would love to come back and play some shows. Plus Matt and Pete are massive Liverpool fans so would be great for them if we could make it during the football season.
